SA335 P91 Superalloy Tube Heat Treatment Requirements
P91 is a grade that conforms to the ferritic alloy ASME SA335 standard for high temperature seamless pipes, and it is also a grade that we sell well.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ALLOY STEEL P91 PIPES
Grade P91 | C, % | Mn, % | P, % | S, % | Si, % | Cr, % | Mo, % |
UNS K91560 | 0.12 max | 0.30-0.60 | 0.02 | 0.01 | 0.5 max | 8.0-9.5 | 0.85-1.05 |
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ALLOY STEEL P91 PIPES
Tensile Strength, MPa | Yield Strength, MPa | Elongation, % |
585 min | 415 min | 20 min |
One difference between P91 and other grades is the difference in heat treatment temperature:
Except when the buyer specifies Supplementary Requirement S7, grade P91 steel pipe is normalized at a minimum temperature of 1040°C and tempered at a minimum temperature of 730°C as the final heat treatment. For thicknesses above 3 in., when mutually agreed by the steel mill and the buyer, the following conditions are permitted. Liquid quenching plus tempering instead; in this case the final heat treatment of the steel pipe shall be quenched at a minimum of 1040°C and tempered at a minimum of 730°C.
